Spooky action at a distance time travelling entanglement Empty Spooky action at a distance time travelling entanglement

Time travel is not just theoretically possible, it is happening around us all the time – a theory.

A recent experiment using a variation on the double slit experiment (a delayed choice thought experiment) shows an action at a late stage in the experiment affecting the state of a particle passing through the slits at an earlier point. This appears to show time moving backwards.

Another explanation for this observation is that it shows the ability of a particle to influence itself backwards through time – ie it can time travel.
I would like to present a little thought experiment around this concept – that a particle can have an effect on its previous self.
Firstly – travel through time – we all do this in a ‘forward’ direction, but actually there is no universal passage of time. Our travel through space/time is relative – one way of conceptualising this is to consider the well known concept of an astronaut ‘twin’ away on a five year exploration, at velocities close to the speed of light.

When they return after their five year journey, the astronaut discovers that many more years have passed by on earth, let’s say thirty, and their non astronaut ‘twin’ is now an elder sibling.
This is due to an aspect of Einstein’s theory of relativity known as ‘time dilation’ – in simple terms, that the passage of time for the rapidly moving astronaut is slower than for the earth bound twin.
Secondly – quantum entanglement – something Einstein called ‘spooky action at a distance’. This is when particles remain connected such that actions performed on one affect the other.

I would like to discuss the relationship, or paradox, between relativity and entanglement – bear with me:
We all travel along our own path through space time, and along that path we interact with other consciousnesses, our wives, our children, our space travelling twin, but we don’t necessarily do this at the same absolute rate – it can be argued that we travel in our own bubble of space/time, at our own rate of travel through ‘absolute’ time. (Hang on though - there is no absolute rate of time – that is the principle of relativity)
Recent discoveries have shown that the speed of light is not a constant – that it can vary. The structure of some light pulses were manipulated, and some photons travelled at a speed slower than the previously considered unvarying rate (Einstein’s C)

smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/speed-light-can-vary-180953949/?no-ist

Just consider that thought – that the speed of light is not constant – so now instead of the rate of passage of time varying depending on how close to the speed of light an astronaut travels (the time bit of space/time), the rate of passage of time could vary depending on the speed of light itself in whatever particular bubble of space/time the astronaut is inhabiting – where they are, or the space bit of space/time.
The theory is still the same,  that the passage of time is different in one part of space time, compared to another, except now we don’t require a space ship that can travel at close to the speed of light. (Phew, because we haven’t built one yet).
Now back to entanglement, and now you really have to bear with me.
Let’s go back to our astronaut and earthbound twins, and theorise that some or all of their particles are entangled. As their consciousnesses travel at different rates through space time, one gets older with respect to the other, let’s call that relative (!) ageing. However, if their particles are entangled, and a change to one particle affects the other, they have another bond over space/time – this can be considered an ‘absolute’ ageing or passage through space/time.
Another thought experiment – let’s call the astronaut twin Jim, and the earth bound twin John. On John’s 30th birthday, a particle in one of his atoms is changed and causes a change to a cell which makes it cancerous – a bit morbid, and probably not actually possible – but this is a thought experiment, and I need John to have a serious illness at this point in (his) space/time.
OK – so the entangled particle in Jim is also changed, and as the particles are linked by a theoretical ‘absolute ageing both particles are affected at the same point in their entangled passage through space/time. The change to both particles is instantaneous as far as the particles are concerned, and both twins contract cancer on their 30th birthday.
Now for the purpose of this thought experiment, let’s give the twins a means of communication during their travels – the astronaut twin can phone home, and does so on his birthday. When astronaut Jim phones home on his 30th birthday, not yet feeling any symptoms from his brand new cancer cell, he gets a message to say his twin, poor earth bound John has already died. That’s because although it is only Jim’s 30st birthday, his rate of passage through space/time is dilated, and by that point in their relative journeys, poor old John was 40, and had cancer for ten years.
So back to the thought experiment – Jim now knows he has a cancer growing, so has a procedure to change the cell, and the entangled particle back to normal, and it is now no longer cancerous. This change affects both entangled particles instantaneously as before, and now, just a few minutes into their 30 birthdays, both Jim and earth bound John don’t have cancer any more. Jim gets back on the phone to earth and has a long chat with John, who is now happily 40 years old and only bemoaning the fact that he has less hair than Jim.
This may sound impossible, but if entanglement is real – which it appears to be, it effectively means that a particle can be in two places at the same time, and if relatively different rates of travel though time is also possible, then that particle can be it two places that are also bubbles of space/time that are travelling at different rates.
Back to the beginning of this piece, and the delayed choice thought experiment. In simple terms, the introduction of a second interaction appears to influence whether an atom ‘chooses’ to be a particle or a wave at an earlier point in time – that a subsequent act changes the state of the atom at an earlier point in space/time.
The double slit experiment itself is weird enough – it is really a proof that something can exist in superposition, in all states, until it is measured. An atom (or photon, or electron) can be either a particle or a wave as it passes through a grate.

theobservereffect.wordpress.com/the-most-beautiful-experiment/
louisdelmonte.com/a-classic-time-travel-paradox-double-slit-experiment-demonstrates-reverse-causality/

The addition of a second grate immediately after the first appears to change the state of the atom as it passed through the previous first grate. This indicates that the action of adding the second grate has an affect at an earlier point in time (reverse causality).
The other weird thing about the double slit experiment is that it appears to show a single atom / photon / electron passing through two slits at the same time – hence the theory that the particle is a wave at this point (or it could be an entangled particle that is in two places at the same time).
If it is an entangled particle, this could explain how a subsequent action has an earlier effect – like the twins, the particle is in two different points of space/time – on different relative time lines due to slight variations in the speed of light, but absolutely linked, and a change (the introduction of a second grate) can make a change to itself at an earlier point in time. At this stage of the thought experiment, there are not twins anymore – no astronaut Jim and earth bound John – just an entangled Jordan who is in both places at the same time. (Still with me?)
In the delayed choice / double slit experiment, one entangled version of the atom reaches the second grate ‘sooner’ than its other entangled version, which is still to pass through the first grate, and the change caused to it as it passes through the second grate immediately changes the entangled version that is still to pass through the first grate.
In my simple world this would be changes in the consciousness of the atom (ouch) as it travels in its two entangled states, in separate space/time bubbles, which come about as a result of changes in its physical state at an ‘absolutely’ time locked point of space/time.

Discuss!

Very interesting research going on in this area to be sure. Very Happy

Heisenberg, your links will not be clickable until you have been here for a week - this is hard coded in the software and it is beyond my control as I have no access to the source code.

In the meantime they are very interesting and members can copy and paste the links into their browsers or search engines. Very Happy

You may want to explore a physicist by name of Ohanian,
who calculated that time could travel backwards using
formulae from relativity.
